How to Survive Clinicals...on Your Period

Posted by Camille Gray on

Top 8 products to help you survive clinicals during your period.

Clinicals suck. The anxiety, the stress, the standing around trying to look competent.

What could make it worse?

Having your period during clinicals.

Even worse? Having to wear white scrubs while having your period.

My nursing school made us wear all white scrubs. None of the nursing students supported the color choice. During the first day orientation, the dean of nursing gave a big speech. It was long and drawn out but the gist of it was “I had to wear white, so you’re going to have to wear white.” She concluded her speech with an entire lecture on proper underwear.

Every one of us feared the dreaded time of the month. But you don’t have to.
Even if you don’t have to wear white scrub clinicals on your period suck.
I can help you out.

I have compiled a list of the best products to get you through some of the longest hours of your life. No more worrying about white scrubs!

1. Menstrual Discs

This is by far my favorite product! These discs are a game changer!

12 hours of protection!!!  You can wear them for up to 12 hours and they are disposable, so no washing out bloody products. Once it was in, I didn’t even feel it.

I have to admit I was skeptical but their claim was too good to pass up. Good news. They work! I didn’t have any leakage even when I went for a run. I had some reservations about changing them but it was super easy. Newbies might want to change it in the shower but I seriously didn’t have any messes.

You can sign up for monthly shipments so you never have to caught unprepared. I love these!

2. Period Panties

Let’s face it, even with the best period product inside of you, you’re still going to worry about leakage. When you are wearing white scrubs, you don’t want to take any risk.

There so many different period panties out there now. Why couldn’t they have been around when I was in school??

There are panties that replace tampons and some that are super absorbent to protect against leakage. Make sure you know which you are getting. That could be a messy mistake!

I personally use the absorbent leak protective ones. I’m just not brave enough to go without SOMETHING.

These are the best. They come in nude (you can wear them under your white scrubs) and black. They are super absorbent and comfy. They fit pretty true to size.

I like that the company cares about the environment and the undies are organic cotton.

3. Menstrual cup

Menstrual cups are great if you are ready to kick the tampon habit. They are reusable so you don’t have to remember to buy products every month. I try to be environmentally friendly so I like the idea of less waste.

They can be a little messy to change so newbies may want to try while in the shower. You can wear them for up to 12 hours so you don’t have to worry about changing anything while you are out and about.

The OrganiCup is soft and pliable so it is very comfortable to wear. It can be worn for up to 12 hours and holds around 3 tampons worth of blood. They are made from medical grade silicone and is hypoallergenic and toxin-free. Let’s face it, we don’t need toxins in our lady parts.

4. Organic Tampons

Regular tampons are full of chemicals and toxins that you can easily absorb through your skin. And why do they think adding fragrance is a good idea? I don’t know about you but I don’t need my lady bits smelling like cotton candy or rain fresh.

Cora Organic Tampons are a great alternative. They are made with organic cotton, not synthetic rayon. No nasty chemicals used!

I’ve tried several brands of organic tampons but these are my favorite. I don’t have any leakage issues and they are comfortable.

I like the company’s commitment to helping young girls who can’t get menstrual supplies. The applicator is also recyclable. Monthly woman supplies can end up just sitting in landfills.

You can buy just a box or sign up to receive them monthly. They even have combination boxes so you can be covered from your lightest to heaviest day.

 5. Period Gummies

Mood swings and cramps go hand in hand with having your period. These gummy vitamins claim to help eliminate both. They are filled with healthy ingredients and no artificial junk.

Check out the ingredients before you buy and make sure you can tolerate them.
Keep the crazy safely hidden with these yummy gummies.

 6. Booty Wipes

Sometimes toilet paper just isn’t enough. You need to feel clean. If you are focused on feeling icky in your micky you can’t concentrate on what’s going on around you.

Booty wipes help you clean up and feel fresh. These wipes say they are 100% biodegradable. It is really important to me to use a product that won’t clog up the sewer lines. If you have ever lived in an old building then you can understand. You are already dealing with one mess, you don't need two.

They are individually packaged so you can slip 1 in your pocket and freshen up during your day.

 7. Electrical Stimulation

WOW!!! This product is amazing. I use to spend every period with a heat pack on my belly but now I am almost completely pain-free.

It's super easy and painless. It feels a little tickly. Basically, it helps block the pain signals by sending electrical impulses.

It makes a huge difference with the pain.

Any woman who has missed school or work due to menstrual cramps needs to check this out. You can even wear it while you are out so you don’t have to miss clinicals when you have your period.

8. Heat Pad

A much cheaper option for pain relief is a heating pad. It might not be as effective as the electric stimulation but heat can really help.

These heat pads are made for cramp relief. They fit right on your belly and stay warm for up to 12 hours. You can wear one all day without anyone noticing.

I hope some of these products help you make it through your clinicals leak free.
